As we age, it’s not uncommon to notice changes in our bodies, such as increased sensitivity or stiffness in the shoulders. However, it’s important to remember that aging does not equate to deterioration. That aging and shoulder stiffness don’t mean failure.

Contrary to popular belief, structural changes in the shoulder, like minor rotator cuff tears, don’t always leave you in pain. According to research, up to 30% of adults over 60 may have these tears visible in scans, without any pain.

Meaning that structure doesn’t always match symptoms.

In this video, we explore the reasons behind shoulder pain and how managing it effectively can help you maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle.

Here are 5 ways this video might help you:

✅  Explore how ongoing pain isn’t always worsening damage, but it’s often about protection.

✅  Learn how pain can lead your brain to increase protective muscle tension.

And how this can lead to stiffness and reduced range of motion.

✅  Discover how movement avoidance may decrease circulation and increase stiffness

✅  See how your neck and shoulder tension may reflect mental load and chronic cognitive overwhelm, not just posture

✅  Understand how gentle, safe movement can help rebuild circulation, supporting your confidence, independence, and capability for daily life.

✨ So join me, and discover how gentle movement can help restore your confidence and keep you active. Let’s redefine aging!

Because Shoulder pain isn’t random. It’s patterned.

Here it is…

Hi, I’m Sarah Gowans, remedial massage and cranio-sacral therapist, and emotional integration facilitator at Blossoming Me and the Healthy Learning Lounge.

In this short series, we’re exploring some of the most common reasons shoulders become tight, painful, or restricted, and simple ways to support them.

Because shoulder pain isn’t random.

It’s often your body responding to load, stress, movement patterns, and how much you’ve been carrying.

Let’s take a closer look:

If you’ve noticed, your shoulder feels stiffer or more sensitive lately, especially when you’re lifting overhead, I want to reassure you, aging doesn’t mean failing.

The Rotator Cuff Muscles Stabilise Our Shoulder

Research shows that up to 30% of adults over the age of 60 have small rotator cuff tears that show up on scans, but no pain at all.

So structure doesn’t always equal symptoms.

Now, here’s something really important.

Pain science shows that when we experience pain once, the brain remembers, and the next time we move, it may increase protective muscular tension. That guarding that restricts the range of movement over time.

Avoidance can reduce circulation and increase stiffness. So sometimes what keeps pain going isn’t actually worsening damage. It’s protection. Your body protecting itself.

So, if you’ve been thinking, “I’d better, better not lift that, I don’t want to make it worse,” that’s understandable. But gentle, safe movement actually helps rebuild our confidence and our circulation.

Your Bridge to Independence and Confidence

And confidence in your shoulder supports your independence.

When you trust your shoulder, you keep gardening, you keep traveling, you keep lifting your grandchildren, and being involved and engaged in your life. Longevity isn’t just about lifespan. It’s about your capability.

You are not fragile. You are adaptable. And shoulder pain isn’t random. It’s a pattern, and patterns can respond to the right support.

Your shoulders have been carrying a lot, so let’s help them feel safe enough to let go.

And if this felt familiar, if you recognised yourself in this video, the tight shoulders, the creeping stiffness, the sense that you’re holding more than just your arms up all day. I want you to know something.

Your body isn’t being dramatic. It’s being honest.

For so many, neck and shoulder tension isn’t just about posture; it’s about mental load, chronic cognitive overwhelm, and being the steady one, the reliable one, and over time, that can show up physically.

Your shoulders have been carrying a lot. It’s really okay to let them feel supported, too.

So if today’s video felt familiar, our next chapter in our Shoulder Pain series might feel like your next supportive step. When we look across everything we’ve talked about so far, about shoulder pain, plus some gentle practices to help your body soften.

Remembering that shoulder pain isn’t random. It’s responsiveness from our very wise, adaptive, and capable body.

Your shoulders don’t have to do it alone.

So I hope you found value in today’s video. If you did, please like and share it. And join us next time for our next chapter in our Shoulder Pain series, and support yourself in living your most fulfilling life.

So from my heart, to your heart,

Namaste.

Sarah xx
