Hello and welcome. I’m Sarah Gowans, remedial massage, craniosacral therapist, and emotional integration facilitator at BlossomingMe and the Healthy Learning Lounge.
Here we are a sanctuary for you to tap into, to nurture your journey to health, wellbeing, and a positive mindset. We focus on helping you to clear stresses, tensions, and blocks that can hold you back from living your most fulfilling life.
Today I’ll share with you from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) perspective, how your shoulder pain may be linked to headaches, chest tension, and stiffness in your back, neck, and even your arms. Particularly, tightness and tension through your hand, wrist, and elbow. And what you can do about it. Let’s break it down.
The Meridian Connection to Your Shoulder Health:
In traditional Chinese medicine, TCM, energy, or Chi, flows through our meridian channels, pathways that connect different parts of our body. If this flow of chi is blocked, pain and dysfunction can result. Along these pathways, the meridians running through our shoulders don’t stop there. They continue through our arms, chest, and back, throughout our whole body.
Here are six of the main meridian channels that go through our shoulder area, and beyond:
The Large Intestine runs from our index finger through our hand, arm, and shoulder, all the way to our face. When it’s blocked, it can trigger shoulder pain and stiffness. It can also lead to wrist or elbow pain, even headaches, or tension in our jaw.
The Small Intestine Meridian travels from our pinky finger, along our arm, over our shoulder blades, and up to our neck. So when it gets blocked, it can cause pain in our shoulder, especially through the shoulder blade. It can also cause pain and tightness in our elbows, neck, or upper back.
The Triple Heater Meridian follows a similar path, but connects to our chest and our rib cage as well. So when this meridian is restricted, you may experience tightness in your elbow, tension in your chest, as well as pain or limited shoulder movement.
The Lung Meridian runs from our chest, through the front of our shoulder, and down to our thumb. If our chi is stuck, it can affect our breathing and rib mobility. It may lead to restricted breathing, a heavy feeling in the chest, or even the elbow, as well as shoulder pain.
The Gallbladder Meridian runs along the side of our whole body, from our head to our toes, wrapping around our shoulders along the way. Connecting our shoulders to our head means this meridian is often responsible for neck pain and stiffness, as well as headaches and migraines, as well as shoulder pain. It also links our shoulders to our hips. Potentially affecting our balance and mobility as well.
The Bladder Meridian travels down the back of our whole body, again, from our head to our toes. It’s often linked to spinal tension, headaches, neck and lower back pain, as well as shoulder pain. Often, the pain and tension are in slightly different positions from a stuck gallbladder meridian.
So what can you do about it?
Some gentle tapping or brushing along these meridian channels with your hand, or even a soft brush. Simple breathwork exercises can also help to release tension in and around your rib cage. Especially to ease the flow of your lung meridian. Simple meridian massage techniques can also open up these pathways and activate energy flow through all the meridians.
These exercises can help ease stuckness in your body and support and stimulate your chi flow through your body’s meridians, to improve your balance, mobility, and relieve your shoulder pain, tension, and more.
To help you even more
And to help you even more, I’ve created a video: “Meridian Magic” for easy meridian brushing through your triple heater, meridian, gallbladder, and bladder meridians. To help reduce your shoulder pain, headaches, rib, arm, chest, or back pain! I will leave a link to it in the description box below.
