The Unexpected Link Between Your Shoulders and Wrist Pain:
Understanding the Full Body Connection
Did you know your wrist pain could be coming from tight shoulders or even your rib cage? It’s not just your hands – RSI is more connected to your whole body than you think. Hi I’m Alexis Weidland, osteopath and co-founder of BlossomingMe and Healthy learning Lounge. Join me as I take a deeper look
When you feel pain in your hands and wrists, the last place you might think to check is your shoulders or rib cage. But, believe it or not, the alignment and mobility of your upper body play a crucial role in your hand and wrist health. Imagine your body as a chain – if one link is out of sync, it affects the rest. That’s exactly how poor shoulder and rib cage alignment can set the stage for Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) in your hands and wrists.
Understanding the Upper Body Connection
Your shoulders and rib cage may seem far removed from your wrists, but they’re actually closely linked. Nerves that come from your neck and muscles, and tendons that come from your neck and rib cage, become part of your shoulder complex or travel down your arms. Forming a network that allows you to move, lift, and grip. When there’s an imbalance or restriction in your upper body, it pulls your shoulder complex out of its optimal position, causing the muscles of the arm to perform their actions from a compromised position.
It is compromised for a few reasons:
First
Because nerve and blood flow becomes restricted, due to muscle tension and altered position of joints and bony structures.
Second
Because the muscles need to perform their actions from an incorrect position, meaning they are less string in that position and they may rub on structures that they normally wouldn’t.
This can cause tension in the muscles, tendons and ligaments down to your arms and hands, causing joint restriction and reduced mobility plus reducing the endurance and resilience of the muscles, making them more vulnerable to strain.
For example,
If your shoulders are tight, they often sit in a more forward and hunched position. This creates reduced space for the nerves as they pass between the head of the humerus and the collar bone. Plus the forward position of the shoulder joint, also causes a rotation in that joint, reducing the range of motion especially into outward rotation. This puts pressure on many of the muscles that sit there and may cause rubbing of the muscles over the bone, creating inflammation and pain. But further, it pulls the muscles of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand out of position so that when they are used, they have to work harder and get strained more easily too.
Over time, this can lead to RSI, as the constant tension wears down the tendons and muscles in your hands and wrists. But as you can hopefully see, it can cause injuries anywhere from the shoulder and shoulder muscles, all the way down to the finger tips.
Practical Tip:
Start paying attention to the areas above your wrists. Do your shoulders feel stiff or sore after a long day? If so, you may need to take extra care to relieve tension in these areas to support your hand and wrist health.
How Poor Shoulder Mobility Can Lead to Wrist Pain
When your shoulders lack flexibility or are out of alignment, they limit the movement of your arms and wrists. Tight shoulders often lead to a forward head posture and rounded back, which as discussed previously not only creates tension in the upper body but can also put pressure on your wrists by changing the nerve, blood and muscle actions. In addition to this however, if there is limited movement in the shoulders, in order to be able to lift and move the way you want to, the muscles and joints of your arm, wrist and hand are forced to compensate.
For example
you might reach more with your fingers and elbow to grab something or you place your wrist in an awkward position to carry something, or the muscles of your forearm and wrist take the weight of something that would usually be supported by your biceps and the muscles of your whole shoulder complex
Practical Tip:
Incorporate shoulder stretches and mobility exercises into your routine. Try gentle shoulder rolls, shoulder shrugs, and chest-opening stretches. These exercises help release tension in the upper body, creating more mobility in your shoulders and reducing strain on your wrists.
Rib Cage Dysfunction and its Impact on RSI
The rib cage provides stability and structure for the entire upper body. When the rib cage is restricted – whether due to poor posture, muscle tightness, or shallow breathing – it affects the alignment and movement of your shoulders, arms, and hands. Rib cage dysfunction, where the rib cage becomes stiff or immobile, is especially problematic because it reduces the amount of space available for the nerves running from the spine to the hands.
When your rib cage doesn’t move well, your body must compensate. This misalignment can create a ripple effect, where tension in the rib cage leads to tightness in the shoulders, which then affects the wrists.
- A study by the American Physical Therapy Association found that individuals with restricted rib cage movement were 40% more likely to experience chronic upper limb pain, including wrist and hand pain.
Practical Tip:
Try adding rib cage mobility exercises into your day. These can include deep, diaphragmatic breathing, side stretches, and rotational movements like seated twists. These exercises help increase flexibility in the rib cage, promoting better alignment and reducing the strain on your wrists.
The Importance of a Full-Body Approach to RSI Treatment
Treating RSI effectively means looking at the entire body rather than just focusing on the hands. Since so many factors – from your shoulders to your posture – can impact wrist health, taking a holistic approach is key.
When seeking treatment for your RSI, some therapists will only treat the area of your pain and some may treat a little further out, but not “holistically” per se. For example if you come in with wrist pain, they may treat your wrist and elbow or even also your shoulder. Some practitioners however, will look more comprehensively at you as a whole person. It is important to look at many factors, such as
- Stress levels – this affects blood circulation, muscle tension, breathing and rib cage function
- Work activities and ergonomics – posture and support make a huge difference in allowing your body to function pain free. If we improve your mobility and muscle function but you consistently aggravate your muscles or put your muscles into the wrong position for long periods of time, it isn’t likely that treatment alone will have the healing and pain reducing outcomes that you desire
- Posture – As with ergonomics, your habitual positions as you stand, walk and do things at home or in your rest time will affect how you use your arms and what tensions are consistently affecting them and involved in your pain condition
- Improving postural alignment via treatment of the pelvis, spine and rib cage – this goes along with the previous point, but goes a little further, to ensure that all the muscles and joints (and fascia!) are able to perform their required actions correctly and to help reduce or remove the strains and tensions that may be reducing your ability to sit and stand with good posture. When these tissues work correctly, you feel like you are able to stand taller, rather than having to work hard to stand correctly and then not being able to stand that way for long as things begin to hurt (this is evidence that your body is compensating, and needs to use “incorrect” muscles to hold you up)
- Treating your rib cage and neck as well as your shoulders, elbows, forearms, wrists and hands – to ensure that all joints are functioning well and supporting each other and that the muscles are able to relax and function comfortably.
Simple Exercises to Support Upper Body Alignment
Here are a few exercises that help promote good alignment and reduce tension in the upper body:
Shoulder Rolls:
Sit up straight, roll your shoulders up towards your ears, then pull them back and down. Repeat 10 times to help relieve shoulder tension.
Wall Angels:
Stand with your back against a wall, raise your arms, and press them flat against the wall, then slowly slide them up and down. This exercise strengthens the muscles between your shoulder blades, promoting better posture and shoulder mobility.
Rib Cage Stretches:
Sit tall, place one hand on your opposite knee, and gently twist to the side. Hold for 10-15 seconds, then switch sides. This helps release tightness in the rib cage, creating more mobility and reducing strain on your wrists.
Breathing Exercise:
Take a deep breath through your nose, allowing your belly and ribs to expand. Exhale slowly through your mouth, letting your rib cage gently contract. Try this for 1-2 minutes each day to improve rib cage mobility.
These exercises are simple, but when practised consistently, they can support your whole upper body and relieve the strain that ultimately leads to RSI.
Finally
Your hands and wrists may be where you feel the pain of RSI, but the root cause often lies in your shoulders and rib cage. By improving the alignment and mobility of your upper body, you can significantly reduce the strain on your hands and wrists, providing more lasting relief from RSI.
