In Chinese traditional medicine, TCM, these two meridians, the liver and gallbladder meridians are like the dynamic duo of our body’s energy system. When they’re in harmony, you feel like a rock star, flexible, resilient, ready to take on the world. But when they’re not, when they’re out of balance, you might feel like you’re stuck in a rut, struggling with mood swings, frustration, and irritability. 

The Liver Meridian: Your Detox Superhero

Think of your liver meridian like a detoxifier, clearing out your physical and emotional toxins. and promoting calming hormones like oxytocin and dopamine. When it’s balanced, we feel calm, connected and content, but when it’s not, we might feel anxious, stressed and overwhelmed.

The Gallbladder Meridian: Your Decision-Making Dynamo

The gallbladder meridian is CEO, making decisions and taking action with clarity and emotional stability. When it’s balanced, we feel confident, courageous, and ready to take on new challenges, take on the world. But when it’s not, we might feel stuck, uncertain, and lacking direction.

It can inspire us! Connecting us to our passions, our interests and driving motivations, as well as our enthusiasm.

Balance: Ideas Flow and Act With Ease

While the gallbladder meridian improves our decision making ability. Helping us make confident decisions, commit to plans and take bold action. Supporting our ability to act, implement and execute the ideas from liver, so they become a reality. A balanced gallbladder meridian gives us the courage to take risks and the determination to follow through, to persevere through challenges. It can help us to stay focused, motivated and accountable for bringing our goals to fruition. 

When liver and gallbladder meridians are balanced and in harmony, We may experience things like a flow  ideas and inspiration, the confidence and courage to take action, and the ability to turn our ideas into reality. Giving us a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

However, when the liver and gallbladder meridians are out of balance, we might experience creative blocks and a lack of inspiration, difficulty making decisions, or even taking action. Feeling stuck, or uncertain about our direction, and that can lead to frustration and irritability.

So how can we balance our liver and gallbladder meridians and unlock our happy hormones? 

Here are some practical ideas for you. You might like to try relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga or meditation, gentle stretching and strengthening exercises that build strength and flexibility slowly, like Tai Chi or once again yoga.

Bodywork therapies can also help keep our meridian energies, flowing smoothly. These can include massage, acupressure, craniosacral therapy, and osteopathy, just to name a few.  Mindful breathing practices and meridian brushes can help restore balance too. To further support and stimulate our liver, we can use visualisation techniques to connect our ideas with action. We can remember to take breaks, for brainstorming and to explore new ideas. As well as scheduling time for self-care and relaxation, so we can avoid burning out.
