Trauma is a word that often evokes images of shattered souls, broken spirits, and irreparable damage. It’s a term often loaded with misconceptions, misunderstandings and fear. Yet beneath this rough exterior lies a profound truth. Trauma is not solely a tale of tragedy, or a mark of weakness. It’s also the res it’s also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The strength within in each and every one of us.

Today I want to talk to you about something that affects all of us in one way or another. Trauma. It’s a word that carries weight. That conjures images of struggle and pain. When you think about someone experiencing trauma, incidents such as violent physical or sexual assault or a terrible car accident might come to mind. But there are other subtler forms of trauma that can impact our body, our relationships, and our life. “Small-T” trauma, often called emotional trauma. It’s often minimized and overlooked. We might think we’ve gotten over some emotional pain, that we’ve simply buried deep inside, and not fully dealt with. A breakup, or being passed over for a promotion at work, or even a simple but negative childhood experience, can cause these kinds of trauma.

Not Just A Burden To Bear

But what if I told you that trauma isn’t just a burden to bear, but a testament to our resilience? A symbol of our innate strength, as human beings. Firstly let’s dispel a common misconception. Trauma is not a dysfunction or a disability that we acquire. It’s an adaptation that we activate. It’s a survival mechanism, designed to keep us safe. A way for us to physically and emotionally cope with the most challenging of circumstances. Empowering us to emerge stronger, on the other side. 

In our journey through life, we inevitably face moments that shake us to the core. Experiences that leave indelible marks on our hearts and our souls. These moments are what we commonly refer to as trauma. But, contrary to popular belief, trauma is not actually an event. Trauma is our body’s innate response, or more accurately our nervous systems response, to an event. Usually a dangerous or distressing event, or series of events. Triggering our ability to fight, flight, or freeze. This enables us to endure, persevere, and ultimately survive, whatever the situation is. 

Reveals Our Resilience, Growth, and Beauty, Within

If we were to shift our perspective to view trauma, not as a symbol of weakness, but as a beacon of strength. What if if we could consider that trauma is not a flaw in our design, but a feature of our humanity? Because perhaps most importantly trauma is not a curse or burden to bear. It’s not a strain on our soul or a prison which we can’t escape from. Trauma is [also] the key to our liberation, opening the doors of our self-awareness. Empowering us to break free from the chains of our past, to reclaim our own narrative, and rewrite our own story. It’s a flame shining a light on our triumphs and challenges, to reveal our resilience, growth, and beauty, within our imperfect humanness. It can fuel our passion towards our purpose, with unwavering determination. To rise above our circumstances, to overcome adversity, and to reach our full potential.

In the end, the truth about trauma is this it’s not a label. It’s an evolutionary adaptation. It’s a survival manual, our ancestors wrote, in the language of stress and resilience. It empowers us to emerge from the ashes of despair. Reborn with new found resilience.

So let’s start to reframe the narrative around trauma. Let’s recognise it for what it truly is. Not a curse, but a challenge. Not a weakness, but a source of [inner] strength. Let’s embrace our experiences, our scars, and our triumphs, and let them guide us towards a future filled with hope, healing, and resilience.
